Class 1 Learning Pathways Program

Requirement: Alberta Class 5 Full License 


If you are a new driver seeking a Class 1 Operator’s licence, you need to complete the Entry Program and Core Learning Program to obtain a provincial restricted driver’s licence.


Step 1: Mandatory Entry-Program

  • $250 payable to Alberta Government
  • 40 hrs of Self-Led Online Classroom Training

Verify your identify using your Alberta driver's license. 

After verification, log-out and exit the tab window


Using the same link, log-in your verified account

Go to My Training-> Class 1-Entry-Program-Sign-up

->Pay for the course


Well done! You are all set to access your modules under 

My Training-> Class 1 Training- Entry Online


After completion, please print your Certificate of Completion and bring it to the registry to take your Class 1 Knowledge Test and get it passed. 

Step 2: Core Learning Program

  • 60 hours of training focused on building a driver’s level of competence in-yard and in-cab. 
  • Additional 8-hour air brake training course is required if a learner does not have Q endorsement on their licence.
  • This driver’s licence allows them to gain valuable on-the-job experience driving only in Alberta while they continue build their skills, similar to an apprenticeship-style training model.


At the end of this training, the driver can take the road test to obtain their Alberta restricted Class 1 driver’s licence.


Experience and Equivalency Class 1

Eligibility:

Farmers or drivers with a Class 2 or Class 3 driver’s licence and at least 2 years of experience driving a vehicle with 3 or more axles


To apply for the program: 

  • Fill up the application form online: Experience and Equivalency Class 1 Application
  • Obtain a letter from your employer as proof that you have at least 2 years of experience driving a vehicle with 3 or more axles
  • Send the letter from your employer and the completed application form through email to: tec.licensingtraining@gov.ab.ca
  • The approval letter received from the government is needed by the school to register for the course

 

Upon successful completion of the Experience and Equivalency Program, a driver must take the Class 1 knowledge test and road test to receive a provincially restricted licence to operate within Alberta only. 


Compentence Building

Eligibility: 

Newly-passed Alberta Class 1 License and Experienced Alberta Class 1 Drivers 


  • Drivers who wants to get their Class 1 Federal License and be able to drive across Canada/US.
  • 17 to 25 hours of one-on-one driving instruction customized to meet the specific needs of the driver. 
  • These needs are identified through an on-road driver assessment. 
  • When the driver has successfully demonstrated improvement in the identified competencies, the restriction will be removed from the driver’s Class 1 driver’s licence, giving them the mobility to operate as an interprovincial driver.


Class 3

Requirement: Alberta Class 5 License


  • Write your Class 3 Knowledge Test at the Registry
  • Enroll in Air Brake Course Program to get Q-endorsement
  • Attend your Class 3 practical training on-site
  • Pass your Class 3 Road Test


It allows drivers to operate trucks and commercial vehicles with three or more axles, including vehicles permitted under a Class 5 licence


Air Brake Course

 Class 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 drivers must complete an approved air brake course to get a Q endorsement on their driver’s licence to operate a vehicle equipped with air brakes. 


  • Complete classroom training
  • Complete practical training
  • Pass practical assesment
  • Pass knowledge test at the registry
